What counts as a Chinese personal name?
Begin by separating the name someone actually uses from a dictionary translation, a nickname, or a form field.
The practical unit
A Chinese personal name commonly has a family name and a given name. Some people also use an English name, a professional name, or a nickname in a particular setting. None of these is automatically a legal replacement for another. For an international user, the first decision is whether a Chinese name is for conversation, study, publishing, or official records.
Do not translate a person
A meaningful Chinese name does not have to reproduce the English name character by character. A sound-inspired choice and a meaning-led choice answer different questions. Both need a complete-name check because the surname, given name, pronunciation, and social context interact.
李清和 is a full-name example: 李 is the surname; 清和 is the given name. Its interpretation is editorial, not a literal translation of an English name.
