Compound surnames and where to divide the name
Not every Chinese surname is one character. Splitting a compound surname incorrectly changes the entire reading.
Keep the surname intact
欧阳 is a two-character surname. In 欧阳瑾言, the given name begins at 瑾, not 阳. Pinyin likewise keeps the family name as one surname unit, Ouyang. A parser that blindly takes the first character would mislabel the name and any following explanation.
A bounded reader is safer
Some character sequences can be ambiguous without knowing a person’s own usage. Our reader recognizes a curated set and asks for confirmation when a boundary is uncertain; it does not claim to infer every Chinese surname. If you know the family’s own form, that takes priority over automated splitting.
欧阳瑾言 → surname 欧阳 / given name 瑾言. The two parts should stay separate in a copied pinyin display.
What to do with this
Pick a compound surname intentionally, then inspect each full name rather than mixing characters mechanically.
