Reading pinyin and tone marks in a name

Pinyin is a pronunciation guide for Mandarin. The accent marks encode tones; they are not decoration.

01

What the marks show

Qīnghé has a high level first syllable and a rising second syllable. Leaving the marks off can be convenient in systems that reject diacritics, but it discards information. A pinyin spelling is also not an English phonetic transcription: the same letters may be pronounced differently in Mandarin.

02

Practice the actual full name

Read the surname together with the given name. Listen to a fluent Mandarin speaker if possible; a browser speech engine is a fallback, not a human recording. Other Sinitic languages and regional pronunciations should not be inferred from Mandarin pinyin.

AN EXAMPLE

Li Qinghe is a practical unmarked form; Lǐ Qīnghé shows the tones that help a learner say it.

What to do with this

Copy the marked form for learning and the unmarked form only where a form requires it.
