FIELD GUIDE / CHOOSE AND USE

Social use, school records, and legal names

A chosen Chinese name for conversation is not automatically the name a school or government will accept.

01

Separate contexts

A student might introduce themself with a Chinese name in class while the university keeps a different legal name in its records. An email signature and a passport form serve different purposes. The site helps with cultural and linguistic choices; it does not provide legal name-change advice.

02

What to verify

Check the requirements of the actual institution, country, and document before using a chosen name in an official field. Keep the Chinese characters and pinyin consistent in the contexts where you choose to use them. If you later change your preference, tell the people who use that name rather than assuming systems update automatically.

AN EXAMPLE

You may use 林知远 socially while continuing to enter the exact passport name on travel documents.

What to do with this

Decide your use case in Name Studio, but follow the relevant institution for official records.
